I'm So Glad

I'm So Glad
A Message from Olivia
SIAS University
Henan Province, China
Fall 2012

During the Fall 2011, Jerrie (the President of WAFW) asked people to send children's books to her.  She collected over 2000 books from the people of Arizona.  All of these piles of books sat in her garage while she tried to find a sponsor to pay for the shipping cost to send these books to Sias Univesity.  No sponsor stepped forth so Jerrie paid the $1600 shipping costs.  The books arrived last week and several of the students in the WAFW are going to take books home to their remote villages this summer.  All of the books that Jerrie collected are in English.  However, the head librarian in Henan Providence (China) was so impresed with Jerrie's efforts that she is now collecting Chinese books from the city people in Zhenghou and she plans to give these bboks to our WAFW students so that they can take these books to their remote villages as well.  These books will be the only books these children have.

Below is an email I received today from Olivia:

Dear coffee mother ,

I have a good news and want to share with you .

If I had a Chinese daughter

Right now, there are lots of closing ceremonies going on at Sias Univesity. And several of my American friends are over there now, joining in the celebration and I am insanely jealous.  Below is an email I got from Robert who is on campus for the first time.  I told Selia that she had to serve as his personal translator.  As ususal, she has taken this request with gusto and enthusiasm.  And if Robert comes home and starts referring to Selia as his BFF, he is in trouble.

Thank you for introducing me to Selia, Bridget. She is such an absolute delight to be around. I already know that like you, I'm going to really miss a lot of the students when I return to the US, but Selia has already hollowed out a Selia-shaped place in my heart that I'll have with me for the rest of my life.
In my three years with the Jefferson Awards, I was blessed to meet and get to know many wonderful young adults. I would always find myself wondering how and why they'd blossomed so early, and into such beautiful people. Listening to Selia talk about her background, hearing her love for her family and her burning desire to help others less fortunate than herself, I see an age-old wisdom in her, and a maturity so far beyond her years.

Yesterday was a very emotional day for me. I've always been very empathic, and so the Women's Symposium had me in floods of happy tears by the end of the day. At the mother and daughter's tea party that closed the day, I felt blessed to see mothers and daughters share their stories with the Academy. It was very intimate, very moving, very special. Among them  Gloria sang with her mother, Amber gave such a heartfelt speech to her mother and Susanna and her mother's obvious devotion to each other had the whole room in tears.

As the tea party came to a close, Selia got back from her TOEFL exam, and I found myself in proud father mode, hungry to know how she'd done. I took her for dinner, and we walked and talked and walked and talked for five hours.  I think I've almost exceeded my 'blessed' quotient for this note, but I'm very happy that Selia has put down roots in my heart.
I took lots and lots of pictures yesterday, so I'll try to get them loaded onto PIcasa and share the album with you.

Gloria's response to my recommendation of her.

Dear Bridget, thank you so much for saying these words! It was the first time I stayed so close with a facilitator. You probably can't understand, but I usually take the friendship slowly, especially foreigners. But the night we spent on your medical insurance is the time I realized that you're the same like me, who has weak time and needs help. Before that night, I thought you were so powerful and independent. It seemed that you could do everything to help us. Then that night, I realized I could be a good helper, too. So I kept staying at that night, though you'd asked me to leave for several times. I was glad Selia stayed with us too. She is excellent and wonderful.

I still remembered how embarrassing I felt when I sent you the turtles on the morning you left. Carina and I just felt we had enough time to find a Chinese style present, but time just went too fast. Then that night I was sitting in front of my desk when I saw the big turtle and the baby turtle that I put beside my pencil box. Did they just look like you and me, a senior and a learner? You're helping me grow. But how can I explain that in front of so many people? How can you understand that figurative meaning? So I just kept silent and embarrassing.

Yesterday I went to Shaolin Temple that we'd planned to go together. I bought a blessing bracelet for you and Robert. Now I know that both of you are serious about being my mentor. I'm so ashamed that I subjectively believed that you were too busy, just kind of kidding me. From now on, I'll get you drowned by questions! Are you ready? LOL~

Love you!

Gloria

Bridget E. Kelly, DEd has endorsed your work as at .
Dear Gloria,
I've written this recommendation of your work to share with other LinkedIn users.

Details of the Recommendation: "It is my pleasure to write this recommendation for Gloria, a student of mine at the World Academy for the Future of Women (WAFW). Membership to this Academy program is in addition to Gloria’s full load of academic courses at Sias University. Requiring an additional 8 to 10 hours of her time each week, the WAFW advances and accelerates women leadership worldwide. Every member in the Academy is involved in improving the world by bringing the UN Millennium goals to fruition. Every woman is required to develop, initiate and implement a leadership/service project. I served as Gloria’s facilitator and mentor as she worked in developing her service project.

Gloria is studying to be an English teacher. And I think she will be an excellent teacher. She has all the right qualities. She is kind, gentle and patient. She is studious and does whatever it takes to get her school done and to get her work done well. And in spite of all of this academic commitment, she makes time for her additionally responsibilities with the World Academy for the Future of Women. She did not miss a single class during the entire time we worked together. She was an eager and thoughtful participant. She watched my every move and did everything she could to anticipant my every need and she initiated solutions to so many situations that I encountered due to cultural differences.

I think I was most impressed with Gloria during one of our regularly scheduled Open Forums in Kennedy Hall. I was co-facilitating a lecture on depression with the director of the Prevention Center. And I had said that students could ask questions in Chinese rather than English because the discussion was so important. The first question was asked and I stood on stage alone, thinking I would not be able to aid in answering this question. Then I felt Gloria lean against me. She whispered and interpreted every question simultaneously with the student. That was so impressive to me. It was just a relief that I remember I just sort of physically leaned on her. And I continued to lean on her for the rest of my time at Sias University. I have a great deal of respect for Gloria."

Dear bridget:

Long time no see. I am Melissa. i am missing you for a long time. Our project was held this afternoon and I was moved by the children and the teachers who had helped the deaf and dumb for 17years. before I get in the world academy ,I really do not know the meaning to do  public benefit activities ,and I feel the bad situation is far from me. and I really do not know how to do it .this afternoon I really found my strength ,I made the children felt happy. i cannot forget the smile on their face .i talk to the teacher and then I know how hard the children are to learn knowledge ,how hard the teachers are to teach .i talked with  teacher Chen. She had sacrifice to the school for 17 years and the headmaster for 20 years. I really moved .i know that I must help them and try my best.

These days ,I feel bad about myself ,but after I went to the school .I thought a lot .i had lot of love from my parents ,I thanked them for a lot, they gave me the healthy body ,they gave me the chance to enter into the Sias. Be one member in the world academy. Last day ,my teacher told me that I can apply for“Phoenix rising women’s scholarship”. Last year I had applied  but I failed .this year I also want to have a try .and  I hope to get some advise from you .the scholarship had affected me for a long time. the award had inspired me to learn from the women who are successful and  i am always happy and optimistic ,I hope to bring others happiness .what I like is affecting others not control others .my sister always like to get advise form me and I also like to help her. she once said to me that I had made a good example ,I am happy to affect others .today’s project had encouraged me much more ,I can share the money with the world academy , the deaf and dumb school children, and with my parents .i do not know the reason why I failed last year ,tomorrow I will go to ask my teacher who had in charge of this .i really want to get the suggestion from you .i had to hand in tomorrow

I really thanks for you to give me a lot when I am in the world academy , I will remember what you had affected me.

                    Love you

Gloria's views on the Chen Guahngsheng event

I sent a newpaper article to several of my students about Chen Guangsheng.  They had not heard of the incident. Here is one response:

Comment on the Chen Guangsheng event

Actually I can’t get enough information about this event. What I know are just several pieces of news from BBC and my dear friend Bridget, Carol and Katrina, which are not enough for me to choose a position. So I’ll show my view on this according to what I heard and saw.

Indeed, I can’t help wondering why a blind man had the ability of “evading three rings of guards.” “He walked for hours, apparently alone.” He must be more worthy to hire than the guards.

Plus, it is said one way the layer suggested to deal with the ones who break the One-Child Policy is to fine them. However, I don’t think we are entitled to the right of distinguishing people according to their fortune, especially, when the anger that the poor hold against the rich is increasing.

But I’m in favor of the opinion that our government had better ensure the information available to the public. Hushing affairs up and keeping citizens blind is the most common practice of governments. They are always afraid that citizens are not civilized enough to keep the unification of countries. When it comes to China, the huge number of population causes more concerns of our government, which is certainly understandable. However, I believe there must be more pleasant and effective way to cope with problems. For instance, all the constitutions and regulations should be applicable to everyone fairly.

Conspiracy is not good to the development of human beings.

Susanna's views on freedom of speech and censorship

Susanna’s views on freedom of speech and censorship

My viewpoint about Chinese information

A few days ago, one of my foreign friends said, why couldn't you get into some of international websites, why couldn't you see what happened in the world? Because your government want you to be stupid and keep from the information.

I disagree. I believe most of the foreigners hold the view like what my foreign friends take. But I do not agree.

Yes, in a way, I admit Chinese government block some information whatever it is about, I'm also curious about what they are. However, I understand some of doings of our government and I support.

Forbidding some information is for the steady of our country and guaranteeing China's long-term stability. And now, not every Chinese could understand English( western culture and language, etc) well, most of couldn't master the foreign language. On this occasion, how could a Chinese tell what is true or not? Also, they may misunderstand what you American or European want to express( perhaps your expression is right and it's also the truth).

Moreover, we could know what our government blocked if we want, only by some little technology. Anyway, we are not idiots.

Besides, as a Chinese citizen, I want you to know that Chinese people could get most of the news from the world, we know what happened everyday in the world, we care about our countryself and the world. I take stock in that we will know more and more with our country's progress until all of. Do not criticize Chinese government, and we won't criticize American government, every government is not perfect, but every government does things for their own country.

Last but not least, we are developing. Please cut down the confrontation, stand on global partnership, fight for the human beings all over the world together.
